This page explains how Biodesign Academy uses your personal data when you read the newsletter, visit biodesign.academy, buy a ticket for a live session, or buy a session recording.
Biodesign Academy is run by Raphael Kim through Biodesign Academy Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales. The company is the controller of your data. That means it decides how your data is used, and it is responsible for it.
What I hold depends on how you use Biodesign Academy. Each case below names the data, what it is used for, and the legal basis for using it.
If you subscribe to the newsletter. Your email address, and your name if you give it. I use it to send you the newsletter. Beehiiv, the newsletter platform, also records whether you open emails and click links. You can unsubscribe at any time with the link in every email.
If you become a paid library member. Your name, email address and membership details, so I can give you access and manage your membership. Card details go to Stripe, not to me.
If you buy a ticket. Your name and email address; the ticket you bought, the amount and the date; for student tickets, where you study; for programme tickets, your institution’s name, its tax ID if you give it, and your course or studio; and your country and card type, which Stripe collects to take the payment. I use this to take your payment, send your receipt, send you the joining details and setup email, give you the recording, and handle refunds. I keep a simple list of buyers in a private Google Sheet. I don’t add you to the newsletter because you bought a ticket. I only do that if you ask.
If you buy a recording. Your name, email address, the recording you bought, the amount and the date, and for student prices, where you study. I use this to take your payment, send you the link to watch, answer questions and handle refunds. As with tickets, I don’t add you to the newsletter unless you ask.
If you join a live session. Zoom sees your name as shown on screen, your email, and anything you say or share in the chat.
If you write to me. Your email and what you write, so I can reply.
I never sell your personal data. I don’t use it for advertising.
Live sessions are recorded. I give the recordings to ticket holders, and I also sell them to people who weren’t there. A recording may include your name, your voice, your video and your chat messages, if you choose to turn them on. So:
You can keep your camera off and change your display name before you join.
I’ll ask you first before I show your work.
I edit out people who ask not to appear, where I reasonably can.
If you’d like something of yours removed later, write to [email protected] and I’ll edit it out of the version I sell from then on.
The legal basis is my legitimate interest in running, recording and selling the session, balanced by the choices above.
Beehiiv runs biodesign.academy and uses cookies and similar tools to run the site and count visits. Beehiiv’s own policy explains this: beehiiv.com/privacy
If a session uses a free online science tool, you make your own account with that tool, and its own privacy policy applies. I don’t share your data with it.
I use these services to run Biodesign Academy. Each one handles your data for me, under its own terms and security.
I may also have to share records with my accountant, or with tax authorities, where the law requires it.
Some of these services are based in the United States, so your data may be handled there. They protect it with the safeguards the law requires, such as the UK and EU standard contract terms or the Data Privacy Framework.
You can ask me to:
Give you a copy of the data I hold about you.
Correct it.
Delete it, where I don’t have to keep it by law.
Stop or limit how I use it, or object to it.
Give it to you in a form you can pass to someone else.
Write to [email protected]. I’ll answer within one month. There’s no charge.
If you’re unhappy with how I’ve handled your data, please tell me first. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) in the UK, at ico.org.uk, or to the data protection authority in the country where you live.
If I change this policy, I’ll update the date at the top. If a change matters to you, I’ll tell you by email.
